Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

Division Director -  Dr. Julie Rios

Meet Our Faculty and Fellows

The Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) offers comprehensive specialty care for patients with infertility, reproductive endocrine disorders, and complex gynecologic conditions. Recognized as the largest infertility program in Western Pennsylvania and centered at Magee-Women’s Hospital of UPMC, the division provides care across the region through outreach locations in Butler, Bethel Park, Cranberry, Conemaugh, Somerset, Hermitage, Monroeville, Erie, Northwest, McMurray, Clarion, Youngstown, Johnstown, and Altoona.

Our physicians provide a broad range of advanced reproductive and surgical services, including in vitro fertilization (IVF), preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), fertility evaluation and treatment, reproductive endocrinology care, reproductive laparoscopy, complex hysteroscopy, treatment of endometriosis and fibroids, recurrent pregnancy loss evaluation, and management of complex infertility and reproductive disorders. Our surgical expertise is particularly extensive and includes advanced minimally invasive procedures that complement comprehensive fertility care.

The division brings together six physicians and two Ph.D. investigators.  Our team fosters strong inter- and intra-departmental collaborations that support innovative clinical care, research, education, and the development of new approaches to reproductive medicine.

Our Fertility Preservation of Pittsburgh Program, (under the direction of Dr. Kyle Orwig and Dr. Julie Rios, provides fertility preservation services for patients whose medical or personal circumstances may affect future reproductive potential. The program offers established and experimental approaches, including ovarian tissue, oocyte, embryo, and sperm cryopreservation, as well as testicular tissue cryopreservation (experimental). The program also provides specialized fertility preservation care for children and adolescents with cancer and works closely with pediatric and adult oncology, gynecologic oncology, and urology specialists.

Research

Research is a major priority of the division, with an emphasis on translational research that connects clinical care with innovative laboratory investigation. Current areas of research include in vitro maturation (IVM), the genetics of primary ovarian insufficiency (POI), reproductive aging and ovarian reserve, reproductive genetics, the reproductive microbiome, male infertility and genetic causes of oligospermia and azoospermia, Klinefelter syndrome, obesity and reproductive health, and advanced reproductive technologies.

Our investigators collaborate closely with the Magee-Womens Research Institute, as well as researchers and clinicians across UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh. These collaborations provide opportunities to translate discoveries in genetics, reproductive biology, and developmental science into improved approaches to patient care.

The division also maintains close partnerships with the Department of Pediatrics, including the Division of Adolescent Medicine, at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, supporting clinical care, research, and education related to pediatric and adolescent reproductive health.

Education and Training

Our nationally and internationally recognized faculty are committed to educating and mentoring the next generation of reproductive endocrinologists and reproductive scientists. The Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Fellowship Program integrates clinical training with research and educational experiences across the division and with our basic science collaborators.

Through comprehensive clinical exposure, advanced surgical training, assisted reproductive technology, and opportunities for meaningful research and mentorship, our fellowship program prepares trainees for careers as leaders in academic and clinical reproductive medicine.
