Department of OBGYN

Division of Gynecologic Oncology

Welcome to the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC.  We are a large and diverse division that you will interact with and work with during every year of your training at Magee.  Our group comprises 12 Gynecologic Oncologists, 2 Medical Oncologists, 6 fellows, and 10 mid-level providers.  Our group has varied interests clinically and from a research standpoint.  We are clinically quite busy and typically run 2 operating rooms daily and have an average inpatient census of 15-25 patients.  Residents rotate on our service in each year of residency and also spend a rotation at one of our community sites, Passavant Hospital, in the second year.    Residents also get exposure to the care of Gynecologic Oncology patients when on the Gyn Night Float Rotation and when covering the Emergency Department.  The intern on service is responsible for the care of the inpatient service during the day in conjunction with 2 mid-level providers.  The second-year resident spends time in our outpatient office while the third- and fourth-year residents spend most of their time in the operating room.  The surgical experience on our service is robust and includes surgery done via open, vaginal, and minimally invasive approaches (both laparoscopic and robotic).  As the second year on the Passavant Hospital rotation, the resident spends time in the operating room and the clinic.  The residents interact regularly not just with our faculty but interface very regularly with the fellows covering the inpatient and outpatient services.  Our division is headed by Dr. Madeleine Courtney-Brooks.  She is a dedicated clinician and educator and has won several education awards from fellows and residents alike.  We are involved in several large, national group cooperative trials with Dr. Alexander Olawaiye as the leader of this initiative.  He is also the Vice-Chair of Diversity and Inclusion for our department.  Dr. Paniti Sukumvanich is the fellowship director and drives the educational curriculum for the division in which fellows and residents participate.  We are also fortunate to have 2 Medical Oncologists who practice within our division and also run basic science labs through MWRI—Drs. Ron Buckanovich and Lan Coffman.  They are a tremendous resource both to faculty and trainees and continue to facilitate a strong translational research program.  In addition to the large volume of clinical and research/educational opportunities at our main campus, many of our faculty spend time outside of Pittsburgh caring for patients in smaller communities around western Pennsylvania which provides a tremendous opportunity to care for a wide variety of patients from diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds.  UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is an incredible place to train and we look forward to meeting you in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology.
