Department of OBGYN

Research

Each resident will complete one or more research, quality improvement, educational surgical video, ethics analysis, educational curriculum, or advocacy projects. There are dozens of experienced mentors in the department and university, protected time in resident schedules, and dedicated Ph.D. statistician support. You benefit from the Magee-Womens Research Institute, which is the largest research institute in the U.S. devoted exclusively to women's health research. Faculty members Drs. Alisse Hauspurg and John Harris act as Directors of Residency Research and help guide residents through the process over the course of their residency. We celebrate the hard work of research every year at Resident Research Day where senior residents present their projects and accomplished alumni talk about their careers. We recognize research experience is important to helping residents match in fellowships and provide skills used over their entire careers. We strive to make this a rewarding and useful element of your time at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital.

Resident Research Day

The Annual Research Day was instituted to provide our trainees with the opportunity to present their research to faculty, trainees, and staff to raise the level of awareness within the broader academic community of our programs in women’s and infants’ health research.

We honor a key supporter who had invested in our mission to train the next generation of physician-scholars by naming the award after him.  Born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio, Dr. Marvin C. Rulin received his undergraduate degree from Ohio State University. Following graduation, he obtained his medical degree from the Chicago Medical School and was accepted as an intern at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago. Following his internship, Doctor Rulin was a captain in the U.S. Air Force for two years before joining the obstetrics and gynecology residency training program at Magee-Womens Hospital. Upon graduation from residency, he joined the medical staff at Magee and was in private practice for 11 years. He then joined the Department and was appointed to the position of Director of Education and Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Magee-Womens Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He was appointed as the interim chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1988 to 1992. He held numerous positions, both in the hospital and at the university, before officially retiring in October of 2000. The Department partnered with UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital to establish an endowment to award the best resident presenter with the Marvin C. Rulin, MD, Resident Research Day Presentation Award.  The recipient of this award receives a plaque and a monetary gift.
