Department of OBGYN

Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility

The Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility provides a very structured rotation for our residents.  Residents in the second- and third-years rotate with the division and participate in clinical activities seeing all patients under attending supervision. During the rotation, they are exposed to virtually all aspects of both reproductive endocrinology as well as infertility patient care.   They are well integrated into the surgical aspects of REI.  Residents participate in our IVF program primarily in an observational capacity with regard to egg retrieval as well as embryo transfer aspects.  Unique to the division is the well-integrated aspect of Fertility Preservation with Cancer and other debilitating disease states.  The division also houses the UPMC Center for Reproduction and Transplantation (CRT).  Residents are educated in Pediatric Adolescent Gynecology and participate in clinical sessions at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

The division is actively involved in Reproductive Endocrine related research.  Ongoing projects focus on stem cell research, genomic defects and reproduction, male infertility as well as Fertility Preservation-Related studies.  Residents are encouraged to participate in division research.

The overall clinical rotation has structured didactics and focuses on recommendations by the ACGME and American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology as related to resident education.  The REI Fellowship allows fellows to serve as “junior attending physicians” and, thus, serve as one other layer of an educational resource for resident physicians.
