Department of OBGYN

Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

The Division of Minimally Invasive Gynecology at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is the largest in the country.  With four fellowship-trained MIGS surgeons who perform over 1,000 laparoscopic cases annually, residents take part in OR cases as early as their intern year and graduate comfortable and competent in advanced laparoscopic skills.  Rotations through our faculty office provide experience in the workup and evaluation of complex gynecologic conditions including endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, AUB, and fibroids.  Further, time spent in the Endometriosis/CPP and Fibroid Treatment Center provides trainees the ability to experience the progressive approach to multidisciplinary care.

In addition to a dedication to intraoperative and ambulatory teaching, our division oversees the long-standing longitudinal laparoscopic simulation curriculum – a curriculum that has served as the foundation to certify our residents in FLS since 2010!  This curriculum FLS includes box trainers (EMIGS starting with 2023 PGY1s) and monopolar chicken thigh labs.  Our fellows are an integral part of the teaching team, underscored by the numerous teaching awards received over the years.

Research interests in the division include perioperative care, advancing diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis and fibroids, medical education, and surgical techniques.   All of our division members hold leadership positions at AAGL, SGS, and ACOG, allowing for unique opportunities for trainees to become involved in national work early in their careers.

We look forward to the opportunity to train you – the next generation of women’s health care providers!
