CENTER FOR INNOVATIVE FETAL INTERVENTION (CIFI)

Division Director- Dr. Stephen P. Emery

The Center for Innovative Fetal Intervention (CIFI), located at Magee-Womens Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, is devoted to the pursuit of excellence in patient care, ongoing research in fetal medicine, and in training the next generation of fetal interventionists.

The Center for Innovative Fetal Intervention is the only fetal intervention program in the Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio, Northern Maryland and West Virginia geographic region. It provides direct patient care for virtually all pregnancies in need of in-utero intervention. Situated in a flagship maternity hospital and directed by Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the Center for Innovative Fetal Intervention at Magee-Womens Hospital offers a wide range of in-utero procedures in an environment that is safe for pregnant women.  A multidisciplinary team of highly specialized experts in obstetrics, maternal fetal medicine, neonatology, genetics, radiology and all the pediatric specialists of the nationally-renowned Children’s Hospital of UPMC work together to provide the best possible outcome for both the pregnant mother and her fetus.

Treatments and procedures offered by the center include:

  • Intrauterine blood transfusion

  • Bladder and chest shunt placement

  • Fetoscopic laser photocoagulation of communicating vessels for twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS)

  • Radiofrequency ablation

  • Interstitial laser photocoagulation

  • Amniotic band resection

  • Fetal cardiac intervention

  • Ex-utero intrapartum therapy (EXIT procedure)

  • Open fetal surgery

As a division of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, the Center for Innovative Fetal Intervention is the primary source for Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Genetics fellow education regarding prenatal diagnosis and fetal intervention. Fellows rotate through the Center where they actively engage in care of this highly complex patient population.

Magee-Womens Hospital is a member of the North American Fetal Therapy Network (NAFTNet), a consortium of 33 medical centers in the United States and Canada who collaborate in the research, diagnosis and treatment of rare fetal diseases.
